The Capri Theatre has been called “The Light of Old Cloverdale,” and not just because of the marquee! The Capri’s presence brought in new businesses when the area was economically run down. The theatre is credited with helping create the unique, Old Cloverdale and artistic Montgomery feel in the area.

Our regular weekend films, showing Friday through Monday, are definitely varied. We show award-nominated films, foreign films, indie films, and more. There have been times in our history where we were the only theatre in the state to show some films, and we’re often the only one in the area to show films like Hundreds of Beavers or Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It. So if you love broadening your horizons, seeing unusual things, and experiencing things outside the mainstream, we’ve got you covered.

YOU LOVE EXPERIENCING OLD THINGS

When we say you love experiencing old things, we don’t just mean our classic films (John Martello’s Classic Film Class, monthly classics such as The Princess Bride, Jaws, The Big Lebowski, Mean Girls, It’s a Wonderful Life, and more), but the building as a whole. Built as the Clover Theatre in 1941, the theatre was renamed the Capri Theatre in 1962. When the theatre was in danger of being sold and torn down, supporters came together to form the Capri Community Film Society, Inc in 1983. Since then, it has become one of Alabama’s premiere independent theatres and Montgomery’s last remaining and only nonprofit theatre. At 85 years old, the Capri Theatre is possibly the longest continually-operated theatre in Alabama, connecting modern-day moviegoers with moviegoers in generations past.
